“Everything is going to be all right honey, daddy understands.”
It would be impossible for me to quantify the value of the training and support that I have received from you so far. This new insight to disabilities is probably going to help my own daughter the most, “Everything is going to be all right honey, daddy understands.”
We are in the early stages of developing the IEP for my daughter. I also have accepted an appointment as an Educational Surrogate Parent, involving a complicated situation. I am a little nervous about the outcome for both, but confident, because I have the power. If that is not enough I have PIC, and everything that goes with it.
I honestly don't know where my sons would be today if PIC hadn't come along when they did.
PIC helped save my son, and therefore my family. About 5 years ago my son, who has Non-verbal learning disorder, was suicidal. I truly didn't know how to help him At this point he was in 7th grade and was failing all his classes. NAMI gave me the number to PIC to see what they could do to help.
I was assigned a volunteer advocate, who received her training through PIC. This was the beginning of an upward climb with him that still to this day hasn't ended. PIC and my volunteer advocate, Karen Thurston, educated me on the IEP process.
To give this brief story a happy ending, I would like you all to know that my son has been back on, and remained on, the high honor roll in all advanced classes since that time. He is now a junior in High School and looking at colleges.
I am so thankful for PIC and all the help and knowledge that they have provided to my family. I honestly don't know where my sons would be today if PIC hadn't come along when they did.
When I first learned about PIC, I was a just a confused and worried mother
I am a Mom of two special children as well as a Volunteer Advocate, but when I first learned about PIC, I was a just a confused and worried mother.
My son has Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. It has been a long road from there to where my family and I are now. Now my son participates in a regular classroom in public school.
Just a few days ago he told me that he had a great day at school because he played Dodge Ball during recess! Just a few short years ago, he never interacted with his peers during recess!
PIC made this possible. From PIC I learned how to effectively advocate for my son. PIC does a wonderful job of explaining the process and how to go about getting the support our children need. I would have been hopelessly lost without them. Thank you PIC!
It was all that our family wanted
It was during our daughter’s 4th grade year when I contacted PIC. I had a wonderful day care provider
who was also a teacher. My daycare provider, told me you need to call PIC.
Charlene worked with us for a period of 3 years. She encouraged me to attend work shops to strengthen my own ability to advocate for my child. These workshops were a wealth of information all provided free at PIC. I also attended support groups that I learned about through PIC.
The best gift that Charlene gave to me was that she could see there was potential in my child and that with the appropriate support academically it would eventually surface. She was right, it did!
My child has been on the honor role at her high school 2 times in the past 3 years. What a turn around! Her art work is amazing and she is now able to balance a full program of sports, academics, art and extra-curricular activities like dance. It was all that our “family” wanted. It was what our “family advocate” helped us to find.
